The 2024 Buick Encore GX: Compact, Stylish, and Tech-Savvy

Buick's 2024 Encore GX presents a compelling update to the brand's popular small SUV, showcasing a refreshed design, advanced technology, and a range of trims to cater to diverse preferences.

Compact Size and Maneuverability: One of the most impressive aspects of the 2024 Encore GX is its compact size and excellent maneuverability. Navigating through urban landscapes and tight parking spaces is a breeze, making it an ideal choice for drivers seeking agility without sacrificing interior comfort. The Encore is the perfect companion for a weekend of Estate Sale tour.

New Design and Trim Options: The 2024 model introduces a refreshed exterior design inspired by the Wildcat EV concept, featuring a new grille design and winged LED headlamps. The Avenir trim, making its debut for the Encore GX, elevates the small SUV segment with exclusive exterior cues and interior content, including leather seats and a heated steering wheel. The Sport Touring package adds a sportier look and feel, accentuated by the available Black Roof Package.

Interior Revamp and Virtual Cockpit System: Inside, the Encore GX boasts a revamped interior with the all-new Virtual Cockpit System. The 19 diagonal inches of high-definition screens under one sheet of glass include an 11-inch-diagonal infotainment screen and an 8-inch-diagonal driver information center. This system not only looks sleek but also offers intuitive technology at the driver's fingertips. (Largest infotainment screen in its class.)

Sport Touring AWD Version - Turbocharged Performance: During our 2024 Buick Encore GX test, we focused on the Sport Touring AWD version, equipped with the optional 1.3L turbocharged engine. This powertrain, boasting 155 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque, provided a notable performance boost compared to the standard 1.2L turbocharged engine's 137 hp and 162 lb-ft torque. The choice of a turbocharged engine in the Encore GX lineup enhances responsiveness. It delivers a more engaging driving experience by reaching torque peak faster and maintaining it over a broader RPM band.

Also worth noting, the Sport Touring AWD version has a nine-speed automatic transmission, contributing to a dynamic and seamless driving experience. The availability of AWD across all trims, including the Sport Touring, adds versatility and stability, especially in different road conditions. For those opting for the FWD models, a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) is standard.

Fuel Efficiency and Driving Dynamics: Despite the enhanced performance, the Encore GX maintains impressive estimated fuel efficiency. The FWD models, with a GM-estimated 30 mpg (combined), and AWD models, with a GM-estimated 27 mpg (combined), strike a balance between spirited driving and fuel economy. The turbocharged engines contribute to reaching peak torque more efficiently, ensuring a responsive and enjoyable driving experience.

Comfort and Design: Seth Valentine, program engineering manager at Buick, notes that the Encore GX offers a spirited and fun-to-drive experience while maintaining a hushed and comfortable ride across various road conditions. Mr. Valentine's assessment was spot on from our vantage point. The aesthetics are surprisingly appealing, as noted by my 15-year-old's fascination with the Virtual Cockpit design and the gloss black elements of the Sport Touring AWD version.

Fuel Efficiency Consideration: While the estimated combined 27 MPG might be a key selling point, real-world results may vary based on driving style. Our experience during a week-long loan yielded an average of 22 MPG, falling short of expectations. Prospective buyers should consider their driving habits and expectations for fuel efficiency.

Price Consideration: Considering the compact size and features, my wife and I briefly considered the Encore GX as the first vehicle for my teen daughter. However, the $35,025.00 MSRP quickly disqualified it from contention. Potential buyers should weigh the features against the price to determine if they align with their budget preferences and audience. It's worth noting that pricing for the Encore GX is extremely competitive in the growing compact SUV market.

Tech-Savvy Features: Buick integrates technology into the Encore GX, with features such as a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, wireless phone charging, and the standard Buick Driver Confidence package. These technologies enhance connectivity, safety, and convenience, making the Encore GX a modern and appealing choice in its segment.

Conclusion: The Sport Touring AWD version of the 2024 Buick Encore GX impresses with its turbocharged performance, dynamic transmission, and a balance between estimated fuel efficiency and driving dynamics. With a redesigned exterior, advanced technology features, and the option for a more personalized appearance, the Encore GX remains a strong contender in the competitive small SUV market, appealing to those seeking a spirited and stylish driving experience. It's no wonder that the Encore GX is Buick's most popular North American vehicle.
