The worst part about fishing is sometimes hours can be spent waiting for the fish to bite. Luckily for people on Bryan Beach at Quintana Beach County Park in Texas this weekend, they didn’t even have to hit the water to catch a fish. That’s because thousands of dead fish washed up on shore, completely covering some portions of the beach.
On Friday, thousands of dead Menhaden fish began washing ashore Bryan Beach, near the mouth of the Brazos River. According to Fox News, officials claim a lack of oxygen in the water caused the mass fish death. A combination of shallow waters and lack of sunlight helped deplete the oxygen levels from the already warm water, which holds less oxygen than cold water.
"So in a nutshell, it was the perfect storm to deplete oxygen levels inshore," said Quintana Beach County Park. Officials are now attempting to remove the fish, but must wait for the tide to recede several more feet before all the fish can be removed. Maybe now restaurants in the area will have some cheap fish to serve this week.
