6 rings: Mike Kadlick talks Patriots free agency, NFL Draft on WEEI's Sunday Mass with Arcand
While a majority of the Patriots' coaching staff hires have already been reported and their three coordinator slots have been confirmed by the team, New England officially announced their entire brass on Monday.
Outside of what we've already touched on (which you can read about by clicking each coach's name) let's take a look at head coach Jerod Mayo’s completed staff with some analysis on each side of the ball:
Offense:
— Alex Van Pelt, offensive coordinator
— Ben McAdoo, senior offensive asst.
— T.C. McCartney, quarterbacks
— Taylor Embree, running backs
— Tyler Hughes, wide receivers
— Tiquan Underwood, asst. wide receivers
— Bob Bickell, tight ends
— Scott Peters, offensive line
— Robert Kugler, asst. offensive line
— Michael McCarthy, offensive asst./quality control
Two previously unknown roles filled here with Tyler Hughes as wide receivers coach and Bob Bicknell as tight ends coach.
Hughes had been with the Patriots as an offensive assistant from 2020-2022 before becoming a quality control coach with the Washington Huskies in 2023.
Bicknell, 54, is a Holliston, MA native and played football and coached at Boston College. He's coached in the NFL since 2007 with the Chiefs (offensive line, tight ends), Bills (tight ends/wide receivers), Eagles (wide receivers), 49ers (wide receivers), Bengals (wide receivers), and Saints (senior offensive assistant).
Though not in the role of wide receivers coach, Troy Brown will return to the Patriots' coaching staff in 2024, per the Boston Herald's Doug Kyed.
Defense:
— DeMarcus Covington, defensive coordinator
— Jerry Montgomery, defensive line
— Dont’a Hightower, inside linebackers
— Drew Wilkins, outside linebackers
— Brian Belichick, safeties (reported)
— Mike Pellegrino, cornerbacks (reported)
— Vinny DePalma, defensive asst./quality control
— Jamael Lett, defensive asst./quality control
Vinny DePalma is a recent graduate of Boston College, where he played football for the last five seasons.
Jamael Lett has been coaching in college since 2016 at Ohio University (grad. assistant, '16), Samford University (secondary, '17-'19), University of Akron (secondary, '20), the University of South Alabama (special teams coordinator, '20-'22), and the University of North Carolina (special teams analyst, '23).
Special teams:
— Jeremy Springer, special teams coordinator
— Tom Quinn, asst. coach
— Coby Tippett, special teams asst./quality control
Some local ties here with Tippett, whose father Andre is a Patriots Hall of Famer. Tippett attended Xaverian Brothers HS in Westwood, MA and played football at both Towson University and University of Rhode Island.
Tom Quinn, who will serve as Jeremy Springer's lead assistant, has coached special teams in the NFL for 17 seasons.
Strength & conditioning
— Deron Mayo, head strength & conditioning coach (reported)
— Brian McDonough, asst. strength & conditioning coach
Jerod Mayo's brother Deron will reportedly take over the Patriots' strength and conditioning staff while Brian McDonough, who could often be seen in New England's locker room hunting down players' tracking devices after practice to keep track of their speed numbers, will take his place as an assistant.
