NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — There's an air of optimism surrounding the summer of 2021 for Coney Island.

"I will say tourism not being what it is is definitely a hit, especially for some of our businesses, but we are seeing strong visitorship so we hope that continues," said Alexandra Silversmith, executive director for the Alliance for Coney Island.

Given the progress the city has made after a long year of closures and restrictions amid the pandemic, officials on Monday announced that fireworks are coming back to Coney Island, starting Fourth of July weekend.

The Independence Day fireworks show will start at 10PM on July 4th. Viewers can stand on the boardwalk between West 10th Street and West 23rd Street.

The iconic tradition of Friday night fireworks is also making its long-awaited return on July 9. Shows will take place every Friday night at 9:45 p.m. through Labor Day.

Maya, who co-owns Brooklyn Beach Shop on the boardwalk with her father, said one summer won't make up for the losses from the pandemic, but she's excited to see crowds return.

"But you do what you have to do and we're holding on as a family businesses we did have about six locations in this area. We're down to 2 1/2 right now," she said. "It's tough to rebound."
