Now during their podcast, 4D with Demi Lovato, which can be found on the Audacy App, the artist has been discussing what being the “breadwinner” did to their family dynamic.
The “Dancing with the Devil” singer explained to their guest, Drew Barrymore, “I noticed that when I came into the spotlight at a young age, and then was the breadwinner… there wasn't a dossier, there wasn't a manual for my parents to read and it say, 'Here's what to do to raise a child star.”
Lovato said that when their parents attempted to discipline them, they would respond with, “I pay the bills.” Demi added, “I cringe now when I think about that attitude.”
As a child actress herself, Barrymore also explained that she rebelled against any boundaries set by her family, musing, “I think it's the parent-child dynamic that gets completely reversed.” She added, “No wonder you won't take an order from an authority figure who's no longer an authority figure because you've now reduced them down with finances and responsibilities."
The talk show host explained that being a parent now has helped her realize just how crucial setting boundaries can be.
The 46-year-old said, “When you're a parent, you try to compensate with so much love and you're almost afraid to get into the argument.
So you let things slide and then you're like, 'Oh, there should've been a boundary in that place probably a while ago,' but I guess I'm only realizing that now."
Having battled addiction struggles and surviving a near-fatal overdose, Lovato has been candid about how their reckless behavior developed over time.
In their Youtube documentary, Demi Lovato: Dancing with the Devil the artist revealed that they suffered a heart attack and three stroked caused by the overdose. Demi is open about how the incident completely changed their life.
