The Padres won a much-needed game against a team they're competing with for a wild card berth, defeating the Marlins 4-2 on Friday evening. German Marquez pitched fairly well in a short outing, striking out 4 and walking none while allowing just 1 earned run in 2.1 innings of work in what amounted to a bullpen game for the Padres. Manny Machado gave the Padres a 2-1 lead in the 5th with a single down the left field line, before the Marlins tied it up on Heriberto Hernandez's solo shot in the bottom of the inning off of Wandy Peralta. Both bullpens held the opposing offenses in check, until the top of the 8th inning, when Luis Rengifo hit a pinch-hit 2-run homer to give the Padres a 4-2 lead. Mason Miller tossed a perfect 9th inning, as the Padres improved to 51-53. JP Sears will square off against Eury Perez on Saturday.
