Speaking to Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, John Mayer opened up about his relationship with Shawn Mendes that’s evolved from a working relationship to a full blown friendship.

"We send each other everything we make," Mayer, 43, said. "It's really cool. As I sit here, I know what he's going for on his next record, which I find actually really informative for me as a musician to understand. If I can understand where the key players are going, it helps me understand where I would sit, given the records I make."
Mayer had high praise for the 22-year-old Mendes sharing that not only is he an extremely talented musician, but is honest with his feedback. "He'll send me stuff he's working on, and I'll send him stuff I'm working on. And we don't really sugarcoat it for each other," Mayer said. "Sometimes we go, 'Cool.' Sometimes we go, 'Now that's one.' He is so honest."
Mendes first met Mayer back in 2016 and previously told PEOPLE about their friendship. "He's one of my really, really good friends," Mendes said. "The most incredible thing I learned from [him] is that no matter how much experience you have, you never are done learning; there's always something to be learned."
Mayer is gearing up to release his eighth studio album Sob Rock this Friday, July 16. The record is a full-blown ‘80s tribute filled with synthesizers and tinges of soft rock.
He recently released the music video for his single “Late Train Home,” something that would fit in perfectly in the ‘80s MTV music video rotation. The music video features Mayer dressed in a leather jacket and sporting a hot pink electric guitar. Maren Morris also makes a special appearance at the end of the video as she sports a phenomenal black leather jacket with tassels hanging off her arms.
