59-year-old man fatally hit by van was trying to help a goose cross the street: Sheriff

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A 59-year-old West Chicago man was trying to do a good deed Tuesday morning, and the Kane County Sheriff's Office said it cost him his life.

Authorities said it was about 6 a.m. when deputies responded to 1200 St. Charles Street in unincorporated Elgin Township.

A man had been hit by a van. He was declared dead at the scene.

The sheriff’s office said Rateb Arqan had pulled over in order to help a goose get across the road. He was then hit by a van driven by a 29-year-old Elgin man.

The driver was treated for minor injuries, and the crash remained under investigation.

Officials with the sheriff’s office asked anyone who witnessed the incident to reach out.

No citations have been issued.
