(WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Cook County residents in need of financial assistance will be able to submit their applications for the county’s guaranteed income pilot program has begun.

Eligible residents will have a 15-day window to apply (Oct. 6 to Oct. 21) on the county’s portal. The county said there is no advantage to applying early and, once the deadline is reached, final participants will be chosen at random.

The $42 million pilot program will distribute monthly payments of $500 to 3,250 Cook County residents for two years. Those eligible have to be at least 18-years-old, a Cook County resident, and have a household income at or below 250% of the federal poverty level.

“After months of hard work, Cook County is proud to be launching the application portal for the largest publicly-funded guaranteed income pilot in American history,” President Preckwinkle said. “We estimate that nearly 36% of Cook County residents will be eligible to participate, and I encourage everyone who meets the requirements to apply.”
