(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A Westmont public works employee died Thursday after becoming trapped in a flooded underground vault, village officials said.

Westmont fire and police departments responded around noon to reports that the employee was in an underground vault that was filled with water following a burst water main at 60th and Deming.

He was found 45 minutes later, unresponsive, and was pronounced dead at Good Samaritan Hospital, officials said.

The employee has been identified as Matt Heiden, who recently became a full-time water department employee.

“Our support and sympathy goes out to Matt’s family, friends, and colleagues,” the village said in a news release.
