The Giants, behind likely Coach of the Year winner Brian Daboll, are gearing up for their first playoff game in six years on Sunday when they visit the Vikings.
But while all the talk has been about the instant success of the team’s new regime in Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen, Joe and Evan say the previous GM should be resting on his laurels.
“How vindicated in a lot of ways does Dave Gettleman look this weekend?” Evan said during Saturday’s show. “The quarterback, the running back, the left tackle, Dexter Lawrence, which was a criticized pick - ‘How could you take a guy like this this high?’ well, he’s blossomed into a superstar.
“Dave Gettleman’s gotta be sitting on his couch this weekend with a cigar and a big smirk on his face.”
Indeed, Gettleman was responsible for drafting Daniel Jones, who now looks like a real and reliable NFL quarterback under Daboll, and Saquon Barkley, who has risen back to stardom, as well as Lawrence, just named to the All-Pro Second Team, and tackle Andrew Thomas, also named to the All-Pro Second Team. So, while Daboll and Schoen are hearing their rightful praise for the job they’ve done this season, Joe and Evan want to make sure the man who put together this current core gets his due as well.
“He was being hammered. He was basically run out of town,” Joe said. “But it’s amazing what great coaching could do…you gotta have a head coach, man. You ain’t winning nothing if you don’t have a legitimate head coach in this league.”
