After opening the gates of heaven for a cast of celebrity impersonators that includes Kanye West, Taylor Swift, Dolly Parton, Oprah, Mariah Carey, and Barack Obama, the song kicks off with sampling Iggy Azalea’s “Sally Walker,” and things don’t really slow down till it stops.
Pushing buttons with the same style and sensibilities as his earlier videos, as Nas tends to do, the “J CHRIST” visual, laden with both LGBTQ and religious imagery, sees Lil Nas spoof various Biblical tales, play one-on-one basketball with the devil, and even walk dance on water.
There’s heaven, and hell, crucifixes (yes, Lil Nas X is nailed to a cross), Noah’s ark, elaborate Sean Bankhead choreographed dance numbers, and too many immaculate ensembles to count.
From the moment Lil Nas X teased “J CHRIST,” writing that the song “is dedicated to the man who had the greatest comeback of all time,” and sharing the single artwork featuring himself dressed as Jesus Christ on the cross, he became inundated with a significant amount of backlash. However, despite the firestorm, Nas pulled out all the stops, staying true to himself and his vision.
