I’m Listening: Trusty mental decompression techniques with Steve Aoki

Before hitting the studio to make 'bangers,' Aoki takes steps to get his 'head on right'

Superstar DJ and producer Steve Aoki recently sat down with us backstage at our 2021 Audacy Beach Festival to discuss the way his mental state can affect his ability to make music -- and some steps he takes to decompress before getting behind the board.

"My state of mind influences my music in a big way," Aoki tells us, before describing a physical remedy he has found that works for his mental health. "For me, before I even get in the studio, I fill up my ice bath. Right next to my studio... I sit in there and meditate for about five minutes and I literally come out of the ice with this extreme high that you can't get anywhere else."

"It's a natural high," Aoki explains. "My endorphins are exploding like fireworks in my brain; I'm alive; I am excited; I have a different process of how I'm going to be creative in the studio. It always keeps me alert."

Another way he keeps his mental health in check is by keeping a clean and bright work area, devoid of distractions."When I lock myself in the studio," Aoki says, "I don't put any clocks on the walls. It's extremely bright, it's very opposite than any other studio you ordinarily go into. It's not moody, it's just a bright room and I kick some a** in there trying to make bangers, you know?But, I have to have my head on right," Aoki reiterates.

Digging into his own inner thoughts and experiences can also be an impetus for action. "Sometimes, with heartbreak, that does help," Aoki admits. "Time and time again history can tell you, artists can tell you, what heartbreak has done with their music, and how it's really pulled some emotional records out. Sometimes, in that zone, I'll go there. But for the most part ice bath, studio, let's go!"
