With Russia’s assault on Ukraine growing more violent by the day, the attacks are being reported to the world by citizens with cell phones, news organizations, and one very high-profile documentarian.
NBC News has confirmed that Hollywood star Sean Penn is in Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, working on a documentary about the conflict in collaboration with VICE Studios.
The spokesperson who spoke with NBC offered no further information about the project, and the actor’s representatives also did not respond immediately when asked to comment.
Penn’s presence was first revealed when he was photographed at a press briefing in Kyiv’s presidential office Thursday. Those images were shared by the Ukrainian Joint Forces Operation Press Service.
Penn also briefly appeared in the Instagram story of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The territory is not unfamiliar to the award-winning actor.
Penn made a trek to Ukraine last November and met with members of the military, according to Deadline. The Ukrainian Joint Forces Operation Press Service also shared a photo of Penn at that time. The picture showed him speaking with the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
