CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Anti-violence activist Andrew Holmes is buying billboards around the city offering free gun locks.

It reads: “Lock The Guns Down. Save Our Children.” The first billboard went up at 95th and Oglesby.

"We're purchasing gun locks for the safety of these children," Holmes said referring to deaths caused by children finding unlocked guns around the home.

Chicago Bears guard Michael Schofield donated 500 locks and Michael Airhart with the community organization Taste for the Homeless donated 200 locks for the "Lock it down" campaign, according to Holmes.

Holmes says “it's negligence" when a child gets a hold of a gun-not an accident. Anyone interested in a free gun lock should call 773-407-9460.
