CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- April is "Autism Acceptance Month" and a new program aims to "Reduce The Wait" for families of young children in Illinois who might be on the Autism spectrum.
Megan York Roberts, an associate professor of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Northwestern University, is part of the "Reduce The Wait" project which, among other things is increasing the number of people qualified to make autism diagnoses.
"Autism evaluation waitlists are really really long and they were long before COVID and they were even longer after COVID."
The goal is to help 1,200 children. All the families who receive diagnoses through the grant will be from Illinois.
"All of these diagnoses are free to families. In fact, we pay families to complete some information for us."
More information on the project can be found at ei.northwestern.edu.
