(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Attorneys have filed an emergency complaint on behalf of a 22-year-old woman who was struck by falling pieces of building facade in Wicker Park earlier this week.
The woman could have died from serious head injuries when parts of the building at Milwaukee and Ashland collapsed onto her Wednesday evening, says attorney Bruno R. Marasso of Romanucci & Blandin.
He said the building’s owner failed to protect pedestrians, even after the city of Chicago ordered them to do so.
While the building's owner had scaffolding erected before the woman was injured, Marasso said there also should have been nets to catch building debris and warning signs.
The complaint that has been filed accuses the contractor, Chicago Scaffolding Inc., of negligence. The contractor declined to comments. Attempts to contact the building owner have been unsuccessful.
As for the unnamed woman who was struck by the debris, the law firm said she remains hospitalized after surgery for her head injuries. She had been scheduled to graduate from college in a few weeks.
