The red-hot Islanders were saved by their red-hot netminder on Friday night in Columbus.
Clinging to a 3-2 lead and the net empty on the other side, Sorokin denied Johnny Gaudreau of a previously wide open net with a sprawling save to seal New York’s third straight victory in a highlight-reel play.
After stopping a shot from right in front of the net, the rebound trickled over to Gaudreau, who fired a shot at the vacated side of the net, only for Sorokin to hurl himself over from the opposite post, and reach out to make the save with his glove hand, preserving the lead in an eventual 3-2 win.
Sorokin’s heroics came on the heels of a 49-save shutout against the Oilers, and continued a resurgent season for the Islanders.
