ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Some local restaurants are getting a major boost from a local grocery chain. Schnucks is buying about $200,000 in gift cards that it'll give to employees to spend.
All Schnucks employees will receive a $15 gift card to a restaurant located within five miles of their work location, officials tell the St. Louis Business Journal.
"This is such a blessing," says Anita Matthews who owns Ms. Piggies Smokehouse.
She says the purchases by Schnucks couldn't come at a better time, as she's had to reduce hours and cut staff and has taken on some extra costs like plexiglass barriers due to the pandemic.
"Especially coming up with the holiday season," Matthews says. "We've got some hours coming in and we're going to make this happen for our employees. I just couldn't believe it!"
She says Schnucks also sells her barbecue sauce in its stores. She's been heartened by the number of people who've set up standing orders, multiple times a week.
“As many families do this time of year, we wanted to support others in our ‘food family’ - in this case the many local restaurants negatively affected by the COVID-19 pandemic,” Schnuck Markets Chairman and CEO Todd Schnuck said in a statement. “We thought the best way to do this was by offering all of our teammates gift cards to these restaurants near our stores, extending our mission to nourish people’s lives to those many businesses and their employees who help make up the communities that we jointly serve.”
