NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — The NYPD launched an investigation after a body was found buried in a pile of snow and leaves in Central Park on Thursday morning.

Police responded to a 911 call from a person who made the discovery at approximately 10:50 a.m. near 63 Traverse Road and Center Drive, a location close to the Central Park Carousel.

The circumstances surrounding the death remain unclear, but sources indicate the body was decomposed and appears to have been there for some time.

At this time, no identification has been made and the gender of the individual remains unknown.

It does not appear to be a criminal matter at this time, authorities said, and the medical examiner's office will perform an autopsy to determine the official cause of death.
